Happy Seasonal Routines!

“There is a better thing than the observance of Christmas day, and that is, keeping Christmas.”

So wrote Henry Van Dyke in his poem, Keeping Christmas. Words we associate with keeping Christmas are Love, Joy, Cheer and Goodwill. However, my favourite Christmas word is Sharing. What I’d like to share today is some of the food most associated with the holidays, alongside a generous serving of thanks for supporting No Targets Just Routine in its progress through 2017.

A dozen foods to help keep Christmas

I recently came across a Christmas and winter holiday 100 word list to be used by teachers to inspire creative writing and other elementary lesson plans across subjects. What interested me was how many of the words might relate to food? I counted twelve:

candy, candy canes, Christmas cookies, cranberry sauce, eggnog, fruit cake, pie, plum pudding, punch, sauce, sweet potato and, of course, turkey.

It got me thinking – what would be in my top twelve – one for each day of Christmas?

I’ll start with what would make it in from the list above:

turkey, plum pudding, Christmas (fruit) cake, cranberry sauce and roasted sweet potato

The others? I didn’t hesitate for a moment:

goose, stuffing, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts, trifle, Christmas stolen and satsumas

It just wouldn’t be Christmas without them! What are your favourite dozen foods for keeping Christmas?

Keeping Christmas thanks

As the season of goodwill arrives and we prepare for the holidays I’d like to say thank you for your continued support and interest in my efforts to share the importance of exercise, rest and the benefits of eating real food for better health.

This year has marked an acceleration in our development as a company, with the promotion of real food, exercise and rest lying at the core of our mission. Of course, our most celebrated success was the release of Just Routine App – with an upgraded V2 following in November.

A way to take stock of eating habits, I have come to think of Just Routine as my better self, nudging me in the direction of:

  • eating smarter
  • becoming more mindful about what I eat
  • eating my way to a more fun, active and healthier life

With over 10,00 downloads, and over a 1000 people signing up for Just Routine daily eating tips in the last month alone, 2018 offers further promise, especially as on the back of this success we are now on the point of securing a number of new important collaborators, including additional contributors, charities and philanthropic organisations as we develop a wider eco-system of real food supporters.

Other 2017 highlights included:

  • Cara Rosenbloom RD becoming a regular contributor
  • Being invited to become a member of the PMA
  • Attending Food Matters Live

Even more exciting developments beckon in 2018, which I hope to report in the New Year.

Keeping Christmas the No Targets Just Routine way

We all keep Christmas in our own way. I hope that however you keep yours brings you joy and a peaceful festive season. And as Henry Van Dyke so perceptively pointed out, if you can keep Christmas for a day, why not always? This tells me he would have understood No Targets Just Routine.

Wishing you and yours a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2018.
