Choose the right carbs to help control blood sugar and weight
When you eat carbohydrates, your blood sugar goes up, something people with diabetes know only too well. Obviously the volume of carbs consumed has a big impact, but the type of carbs you are consuming also has a big role to play – with some foods being much worse than others. A lot of people can be surprised to hear that a serving of white rice can be almost as bad as eating sugar, and can instigate a quick, high spike in blood sugar. Yet a serving of brown rice, wholegrain couscous or lentils has a slower and lower impact.
Choosing foods that deliver carbs in a more body friendly way can help us control our blood sugar and manage our weight. What we eat has such a huge impact and eating healthier carbohydrates is just one of the easy ways we can help ourselves prevent a host of chronic conditions, especially diabetes, but it can also ward off heart disease and various cancers.
