Sweet treats – melons as candy substitutes
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, consuming one or two low-fat snacks per day can control hunger between meals whilst losing weight. This makes melons a natural food fix for the weight conscious, with their naturally occurring sugars capable of satisfying a sweet-tooth craving, while making it easier to resist eating high-calorie candy and processed sweets.
Low in energy density (meaning they contain a lot of water and fibre to help fill you up) watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe are the most common types. Being low in fat and calories, but high in vital nutrients, as well as aiding weight management they can also contribute to a healthier diet with their vitamin A and vitamin C.
Cantaloupe contains the most of both vitamins, meanwhile there is nothing more refreshing than a chilled wedge of watermelon – a perfect way to finish off a meal. Also great in salads, watermelon is an amazing source of the antioxident lycopene, which may help reduce cell damage.
So, choose melons instead of sweets and deserts, combine with other fruits, add to salads or salsa. Or mix with Greek yogurt and oats for a great breakfast!
