Stretch your way into the week

A new week dawns, so what better way to ease yourself into it than with a good stretch to help awaken body and brain! By adopting a stretch routine, you will help increase flexibility, in turn promoting a healthy range of motion in joints, while lowering the chances of joint and muscle strain. This in turn can set you up for the week in all sorts of positive ways, whether it comes to work, rest or play.

For good results, you should spend at least 60 seconds on each stretch exercise: hold it for 15 seconds, repeating it three more times. Depending upon you level of fitness, it may be better to stretch before exercise for some, after exercise for others – this offers further insights.

And don’t just confine a stretch to Mondays. Healthy adults should incorporate flexibility exercises (stretches, yoga, or tai chi) for all major muscle-tendon groups — neck, shoulders, chest, trunk, lower back, hips, legs, and ankles — into their routine at least two to three times a week.
