Six tips for a brain boost.
Although genetics are the foundations of brain health, we can all improve our cognitive abilities. Ironically, while our brains don’t always realise it, a healthy body helps. These six tips for a “Brain Boost” programme follow a holistic approach for maximum effectiveness.
1: Eat a largely plant-based diet that also includes healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, olive oil and avocados. Think Mediterranean diet.
2: Exercise regularly! Always combine endurance training with resistance training.
3: Get enough sleep
5: Don’t neglect social contacts – social interaction is important. Join a class or charity for making new friends and learning new skills.
6: Continue to challenge your mind. Try hobbies that push you out of your comfort zone. Think chess, card games, puzzles or computer games.
Note – this should be considered a cohesive programme requiring the interaction of all the tips, which when taken together can yield results. Simply tweaking a few things, such as adding a morning walk, while this may help physically, it won’t be enough to help forestall mental decline. The combination of diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, social interaction and mental stimulation yields results.
